Web Server Troubleshooting

LASSP currently contracts with Media3, an external web hosting company recommended by CIT. This is a fairly standard LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP) style service where the department can host web pages. Pages hosted here include the main LASSP web site, the main Kavli Institute for Nanoscale Science (kicnano) website, sites for most research groups within LASSP, and sites for special programs or symposia run by LASSP.

Jonathan Fuller is the primary person for routine web hosting tasks. He can build you a basic web site and help you to learn how to load content and maintain it.

Web sites are our public face to the world. They are subject both to bugs and targets for compromise. This can lead to reputational harm to the department. Barry Robinson is available to help diagnose and remediate errors in web sites whatever the cause. He also has access to various self service tools provided by CIT to check web sites for vulnerabilities and other problems. Periodically he will scan the entire stack host to check for potential problems.

There are other hosting options as well. There are outside services that will host websites. If there is a need for a website in the lassp.cornell.edu domain that is hosted on a different platform, Barry can be consulted to discuss potential pitfalls, University policy and best practices, and the steps necessary to get the site configured.
